Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that the commission is fully committed to delivering what he described as the most credible and transparent elections in the country’s history during the 2027 general polls.
Amupitan gave the assurance on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at a Citizens’ Townhall meeting held in Abuja to discuss the newly signed Electoral Act 2026 and the commission’s strategic roadmap ahead of the next general elections.
Addressing concerns over the electronic transmission of results, the INEC chairman acknowledged that technical and network challenges were experienced during the 2023 general election, particularly in the upload of results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
He, however, assured that the commission has undertaken comprehensive reforms, including extensive stress-testing of electoral technology and improvements in logistics and operational planning to prevent a recurrence.
According to him, while real-time transmission of results may still encounter limitations in some remote communities with weak internet connectivity, INEC has strengthened its systems to ensure that such challenges do not compromise the credibility of the 2027 elections.
Amupitan stressed that credible and transparent elections remain fundamental to national development, political stability, and democratic legitimacy.
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness, noting that ongoing engagements with citizens and stakeholders form part of efforts to build trust and improve electoral processes.
The INEC chairman further assured Nigerians that lessons learnt from previous elections are being incorporated into new strategies to guarantee a seamless, secure, and widely accepted electoral outcome in 2027.
The townhall meeting, attended by civil society groups, political stakeholders, and members of the public, focused on deepening awareness of the Electoral Act 2026 and strengthening collaboration to ensure credible future elections.
