The Acting Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has secured the approval of the National Police Council (NPC) for his appointment in a substantive capacity.

The ratification was announced on Monday during the NPC meeting held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presided over the meeting, which commenced at about 2:15 p.m.

Confirming the development, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that members of the council unanimously endorsed Disu’s appointment.

“Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP,” Onanuga stated.

The meeting was attended by members of the council, including former Nigerian leaders and other key stakeholders.

Disu was earlier appointed as acting Inspector General of Police following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, who cited family matters as the reason for his exit from the Nigeria Police Force.

Shortly after the appointment, President Tinubu decorated Disu as acting IGP and charged him to restore public confidence in the police while strengthening collaboration with other security agencies to improve internal security.

Disu’s emergence followed Egbetokun’s retirement last Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Senate is expected to confirm his appointment in substantive capacity in the coming days, in line with constitutional provisions governing the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
