Former governor of the defunct Gongola State, Bamanga Tukur, has emerged the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party by consensus.

Tukur’s 10 rivals pulled out of the race.
A numebr of other positions were filled by consensues, as some candidates withdrew.
Also, other positions were filled by consensus as some candidates steped down citing ‘advice from leaders’ and ‘pece of the party.’
more than 4,500 delegates from 36 states and FCT voted in Abuja on Saturday to affirm his position as the national chairman by voting for Yes or No.
The party gave ballot papers to delegates to affirm since he emerged unopposed.
Tukur’s emergence comes as surprise after leaders of the party in the North-East, to which the position was zoned, backed his key opponent, Musa Babayo, at a delegates congress in Bauchi on Wednesday.
The zone comprises Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.
At the North-East congress, Babayo polled 14 votes to beat Tukur who polled two.
Erstwhile governor of Osun and Lagos states, Brig.-Gen. Olagunsoye Oyinlola (retd.), emerged the consensus national secretary of the party from the South-West.
Others are Umar Ibrahim (deputy national auditor); Garba Chida (national youth leader); Dennis Arokpe (deputy national youth leader); Abubakar Mustapha (national organising secretary); and Sam Sam Jaja (deputy national chairman, South); Chief Olisa Metuh (national publicity secretary).
Delegates were asked to vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ as a member of the convention organising committee and former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Bayero Nafada, said the consensus candidates needed only a minimum number of votes to be affirmed.
Voting is still in progress.
