Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called for a stronger healthcare system in Nigeria, with improved working conditions, remuneration and welfare packages for doctors, nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals.
Akpoti-Uduaghan made the call while speaking at the ongoing “Unfinished” event organised by Ward-C in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The senator, who participated in discussions on maternal health, women’s rights and reproductive choices, said tackling maternal mortality requires more than relying on statistics, stressing the need to address the realities faced by women, children and healthcare workers at the point of service.
She noted that healthcare professionals, particularly those working in underserved communities, require a conducive environment and adequate support to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
According to her, improving the welfare of doctors and other healthcare workers should be an integral part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system and improve maternal health outcomes.
Akpoti-Uduaghan further stressed the need for sustained attention to the conditions under which healthcare professionals operate, saying a well-supported workforce is essential to delivering quality healthcare services to Nigerians.
