The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned four suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) before the Federal High Court in Abuja over their alleged involvement in the kidnapping and killing of a DSS operative, Ekpeyong Asuquo Owoh.
The defendants — Michael Okafor, Chinedu Joseph Chukwudozie, Chibunna Olisa and Chigozie Olisa — were arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on alleged terrorism, kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.
The prosecution alleged that the defendants conspired to commit acts of terrorism and abducted Owoh while he was travelling from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Awka, Anambra State. They were further accused of taking the operative hostage and causing his death during the alleged operation.
The prosecution also alleged that the suspects belonged to IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and participated in activities linked to terrorism. They were equally accused of unlawfully possessing firearms, including AK-47 and pump-action rifles.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following their pleas, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ordered that the defendants be remanded in custody and adjourned the case until October 6, 2026, for commencement of trial.
Security sources said Owoh disappeared on February 23, 2022, along Orlu Road in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, while travelling in a silver-coloured Pontiac Vibe towards Awka.
The allegations against the defendants remain to be proven in court.
