The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has officially commenced its Safe School Initiative in Imo State, marking a significant step towards strengthening security, safety and community participation in the protection of schools across the South-East.
The initiative was officially flagged off on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in Imo State, with the National Chairman of the PCRC, Alhaji Mogaji Ibrahim Olaniyan, joining the Imo State Chairman, Okenze Bethram Uzodinma, alongside other dignitaries, stakeholders and PCRC leaders for the landmark event.
The launch makes Imo State the first state in the South-East to officially commence the PCRC Safe School Initiative, reflecting the Committee’s growing efforts to promote safer learning environments through collaboration among the police, communities, school authorities, parents and other relevant stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the PCRC leadership reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in protecting schools and ensuring that pupils, students, teachers and other members of the school community can carry out their activities in a secure environment.
The initiative is designed to strengthen community-based approaches to school security while encouraging greater cooperation between law enforcement agencies and communities. It also provides a platform for stakeholders to identify security concerns around schools and develop appropriate measures to prevent threats and protect vulnerable members of the school population.
The National Chairman was accompanied to the event by other national and state officers of the PCRC, underscoring the organisation’s commitment to expanding the Safe School Initiative across the country.
The programme is expected to deepen engagement between the PCRC and communities in Imo State, while supporting efforts to improve security awareness, early identification of threats and community participation in safeguarding educational institutions.
The Imo launch comes as the PCRC continues to position community policing and stakeholder collaboration as key components of efforts to build safer communities and protect schools from emerging security challenges.
With Imo now becoming the first South-Eastern state to officially launch the initiative, the PCRC is expected to sustain the programme’s expansion across other states in the region as part of its broader national Safe School agenda.
