NDC Trains Security Stakeholders on Artificial Intelligence in Security Management

The National Defence College, Nigeria, NDC, has commenced a five-day training programme on Artificial Intelligence in Security Management, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to harness emerging technologies for national security.

The programme, organised by the National Defence College Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, CSRS, in partnership with Carriers Technologies Limited, brings together participants from the armed forces, security services, government ministries, strategic research institutions and operators of critical national infrastructure.

Declaring the training open, the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, described Artificial Intelligence as an operational necessity in the rapidly changing global security environment.

He said the Fourth Industrial Revolution has transformed the nature of security threats, with adversaries increasingly exploiting digital networks, automated systems and data-driven technologies to scale operations, evade conventional detection mechanisms and undermine security systems.

According to him, Nigeria can no longer rely solely on traditional approaches to defence and security, stressing the need for smarter, agile and predictive solutions.

The NDC Commandant noted that Artificial Intelligence tools, including machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and predictive analytics, offer capabilities that could enhance security planning, intelligence gathering and operational decision-making.

Rear Admiral Ahmed also stressed the importance of responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in academic research.

He cautioned that while AI can assist researchers in generating information, identifying gaps and developing research materials, users must critically interrogate AI-generated content because the technology can produce inaccurate or incomplete information.

The Commandant emphasised that human judgment and institutional knowledge remain essential in validating information generated by Artificial Intelligence.

He said the National Defence College would continue to promote research, technological integration and capacity development to ensure that Nigeria's defence and security architecture remains prepared for current and emerging threats.

Earlier, the Provost of the Centre for Strategic Research and Studies, Professor Ahmed O. Ahmed, said the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence has generated significant debate over its potential impact on human capabilities and decision-making.

Professor Ahmed stressed that despite the growing application of AI in security, academia, aviation and other sectors, the technology must remain subject to human oversight.

He said institutions must continually review their curricula to determine how Artificial Intelligence should be understood, deployed and integrated into professional training.

The Provost expressed optimism that the five-day programme would equip participants with practical knowledge on the productive and responsible application of AI.

SpyeTV News reports that the training will focus on key areas including AI-driven threat intelligence and predictive policing, autonomous systems and surveillance, Artificial Intelligence in cyberspace, as well as AI governance and ethics.

The organisers say the programme is designed to deepen participants' understanding of emerging technologies while promoting responsible and effective deployment of Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria's security management architecture.
