Former Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Olukayode Egbetokun, has appealed to family members, friends and well-wishers celebrating his 62nd birthday to forgo elaborate gifts and celebrations and instead channel the resources into helping Nigerians in need.
Egbetokun, who turned 62 on Friday, September 4, 2026, made the appeal in a birthday message in which he said he would prefer resources meant for his celebration to be used to support struggling families and vulnerable Nigerians.
He urged well-wishers to use such funds to provide food for families, support the education of children, assist with medical care and extend help to widows, orphans, elderly people and others facing difficult circumstances.
“If you wish to spend money to mark my birthday, please let that money become food on someone’s table, hope in someone’s heart and relief to someone facing difficult circumstances,” he said.
The retired police chief said the greatest gift he could receive was sincere prayers rather than material presents, expressing appreciation to those who had sent goodwill messages, called or prayed for him.
He asked Nigerians to pray for him and his family, seeking divine guidance, protection, wisdom, good health and strength for the years ahead.
Egbetokun also called for special prayers for Nigeria amid security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and armed violence affecting communities across the country.
According to him, Nigeria requires collective prayer, wisdom, unity and responsible leadership to overcome its challenges and effectively harness its human and natural resources for the benefit of citizens.
He further urged Nigerians to pray for leaders at all levels of government and security personnel risking their lives to protect communities, while calling for particular attention to young people, children, families and vulnerable citizens.
“Please pray for me and my family. Pray for our nation. Pray for peace in our communities. Pray for those who are struggling, and where possible, extend a helping hand to someone in need,” he appealed.
The former IGP described birthdays as an opportunity not only to celebrate life but also to reflect on one’s journey and renew one’s commitment to service and humanity.
He expressed hope that his new year would bring renewed strength and greater opportunities to serve, while praying for God’s blessings upon families and for lasting peace, unity and prosperity in Nigeria.
