Former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is being celebrated by colleagues, friends and well-wishers as he marks his 62nd birthday on Friday, September 4, 2026.
Egbetokun, fondly known as “OluKay,” served as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police from June 2023 until his resignation in February 2026, bringing an end to a career spanning more than three decades in the Nigeria Police Force.
His tenure attracted public attention, particularly over the extension of his tenure beyond the statutory retirement age of 60 following a 2024 amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly.
He was formally pulled out of service in Abuja in March 2026 alongside his wife, Elizabeth Egbetokun, marking the official conclusion of his police career.
Born on September 4, 1964, in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, Egbetokun is known for his strong academic background. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Lagos in 1987 and subsequently lectured in Mathematics at Yaba College of Technology before earning a master’s degree in Engineering Analysis.
His academic background earned him the affectionate description of a “great mathematician” among friends and admirers.
In a birthday tribute, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Delta State, described Egbetokun as a “good boss, exceptional leader and man of uncommon brilliance, generosity and kindness.”
Adejobi praised the retired police chief for his passion for the Nigeria Police Force and concern for the welfare of personnel and associates, while praying for continued sound health, wisdom and grace in retirement.
Egbetokun’s tenure as police chief also saw efforts to expand the operational capabilities of the Force and upgrade its cybercrime unit, areas he has identified as part of his contributions to policing in Nigeria.
Despite the controversies that accompanied his extended tenure, Egbetokun has described his time as Inspector-General of Police as one of the highest privileges of his career.
As messages of goodwill continue to pour in, friends and former colleagues are celebrating the retired police chief for his years of service, leadership and contribution to the Nigeria Police Force.
