The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the Constitution, the rule of law and fundamental human rights in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, stated this at the 2026 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he stressed the need for stronger partnerships between security and legal institutions.
Represented by the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force South South, Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Everest Okoro, the COAS said the conference theme, “Beyond Limits,” aptly captured the resilience, innovation and collective determination required to confront emerging national security threats.
He noted that the evolving security environment required a whole-of-nation approach that goes beyond conventional military responses, stressing the importance of credible intelligence, technology, inter-agency cooperation and innovative solutions.
According to him, effective security cannot be separated from strong institutions, justice and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also recognised the Nigerian Bar Association as a critical partner in strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that security operations remain professional, responsible and firmly anchored on applicable laws.
The Army Chief called for enhanced collaboration among the Nigerian Army, the legal profession, the Judiciary and other institutions of state to address emerging security challenges, protect vulnerable populations and promote national development.
He commended the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, as well as the government and people of Rivers State, for hosting the conference.
The COAS urged participants to move beyond existing limitations and leverage institutional partnerships to advance national security, justice and the development of a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
