The National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, is seeking a stronger and more structured partnership with the Nigerian Army to enhance media-military collaboration in support of national security.
The National President of NAWOJ, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim Kwaya-Bura, made the call on Friday, August 21, 2026, when she led a delegation of the Association on a courtesy visit to the Department of Civil-Military Affairs at Army Headquarters, Abuja.
Kwaya-Bura said closer collaboration between the media and the military would promote national security, peace and development.
She commended officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their sacrifices in defending the country and protecting its territorial integrity.
The NAWOJ President stressed that journalists have a responsibility not only to report military operations but also to help the public better understand the security challenges confronting the nation.
She called for collaboration in areas including capacity building for women journalists, security awareness, responsible conflict reporting, countering misinformation, civil-military relations, peacebuilding and strategic communication.
Kwaya-Bura also announced plans to institutionalise the Women in Security, Peace and Conflict platform as a forum for sustained discussions on security, conflict resolution and the role of women in peacebuilding.
She sought the support of the Nigerian Army, particularly the Department of Civil-Military Affairs, for future editions of the initiative.
Responding, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Musa Awwal Etsu-Ndagi, appreciated NAWOJ for its support and continued partnership with the Nigerian Army.
The General said the Army remains committed to gender inclusivity, stressing that the Service provides opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to national defence.
He cited the appointment of a female senior officer as the Army's spokesperson and the establishment of the Nigerian Army Women Command as examples of the Service's commitment to gender inclusion.
Major General Etsu-Ndagi assured NAWOJ of the Army's continued partnership, describing the Nigerian Army as a media-friendly institution committed to maintaining mutually beneficial relations with the media.
He added that sustained cooperation between the Army and the media is essential to promoting accurate information, improving public understanding of military operations and strengthening civil-military relations.
Senior officers of the Department of Civil-Military Affairs and representatives of the Directorate of Army Public Relations attended the meeting.
