The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has appointed former Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) Complaints Unit Head, Dr. Bashir Ambi-Mohammed, as its new Head of Communications and Advertising.
The appointment is expected to strengthen the institute’s communications strategy, public engagement and global advocacy as Nigeria deepens efforts to develop its blue economy and maritime sector.
Dr. Ambi-Mohammed joins IMION after a 26-year career with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, where he served in various capacities, including as Head of the Complaints Unit.
During his tenure, he was credited with helping to save the national economy about ₦4.8 billion through dispute resolution, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms and trade consumer protection initiatives.
He was also the pioneer behind the NSC Complaints Newsletter and served as Chairman of its Editorial Board, contributing to efforts to promote transparency and accountability in port operations.
His professional career has earned him several recognitions, including the NSC ACTU/ICPC Integrity Award, NSC CEO Award, and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International President’s Award.
An expert in multimodal transportation covering maritime, land and aviation, Dr. Ambi-Mohammed holds an M.Sc. in International Transport from Cardiff Business School, United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Lead City University.
IMION said his combination of extensive transport-sector experience, corporate communications expertise and knowledge of media technology would contribute significantly to advancing the institute’s visibility and stakeholder engagement.
The institute, established by the Nigerian Navy, is focused on strengthening professional capacity, policy development and global advocacy within Nigeria’s maritime and broader blue economy ecosystem.
With his appointment, stakeholders are expected to see increased strategic communication, cross-sector collaboration and greater international visibility for IMION’s executive programmes and activities.
