The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has launched a new monthly publication, The National Security Monitor, as part of efforts to strengthen strategic communication and improve public understanding of Nigeria’s evolving security environment.
The newsletter is designed to provide citizens, security practitioners and other stakeholders with timely, credible and accessible information on national security priorities, policy initiatives, institutional reforms, operational achievements, strategic partnerships and emerging threats.
According to the Special Adviser to the National Security Adviser on Strategic Communication and Civil Society Liaison, Chido Onumah, the publication forms part of ONSA’s broader commitment to effective public information management and constructive engagement with citizens and stakeholders.
Speaking in the inaugural edition, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, said the changing nature of national security had made credible and strategic communication an indispensable component of effective security management.
Ribadu noted that contemporary national security goes beyond the traditional responsibilities of defence and security institutions to encompass economic stability, cyber resilience, public safety, information integrity, critical infrastructure protection, environmental security and citizen participation.
He said The National Security Monitor would serve as an authoritative platform for keeping Nigerians informed about national security priorities and emerging challenges, while promoting transparency, accountability and responsible public engagement.
The publication will also focus on countering misinformation, disinformation and hostile information operations, strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture and promoting security awareness and civic responsibility.
It is expected to deepen collaboration between government security institutions and the media, civil society, academia, development partners and the private sector.
The inaugural July 2026 edition features the Fourth United Kingdom–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue, held in Abuja from June 22 to 24, 2026.
The edition examines expanding security cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom in areas including counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, defence, intelligence sharing, strategic communication, maritime security, law enforcement and regional stability.
Other features focus on Nigeria’s emerging security doctrine, the Whole-of-Society approach to peace and security, federal-state security coordination, African-led responses to terrorism, border security and Operation Safe Corridor.
ONSA said the publication reflects its recognition that effective national security requires more than operational successes, stressing the importance of public trust, credible information, resilient communities, inter-agency coordination and sustained cooperation between government and society.
The newsletter is also expected to contribute to the development of the National Security Strategic Communication, Public Information Management and Civil Society Engagement Policy (2026–2030), which seeks to position communication as a critical instrument of national security, democratic governance and national development.
ONSA has invited Nigerians, security practitioners, media organisations, civil society groups, researchers and other stakeholders to engage with the publication and contribute to informed national security discourse.
The National Security Monitor will be published monthly by the Office of the National Security Adviser.
