The Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has commended the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for its humanitarian interventions across Nigeria, particularly in the North-East region affected by insurgency.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Captain Moses Yare following a meeting between the Defence Minister and an ICRC delegation at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, General Musa reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the promotion of human rights and adherence to international best practices and protocols guiding civil-military relations.
The Minister expressed concern over the persistent insurgency in parts of North-East and North-West Nigeria, calling on all stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace across the country.
“Security is everybody’s business, and all Nigerians must unite against terrorism and insurgency,” he said.
Earlier, the Head of Delegation of the ICRC in Nigeria, Doris El Doueihy, appreciated the continued collaboration between the ICRC and the Nigerian military, describing the relationship as vital to delivering humanitarian assistance in conflict-affected communities.
She also commended the Nigerian government for the recent launch of a new training programme for military police in Zaria and reaffirmed the ICRC’s strong partnership with the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of its expanded humanitarian operations in the North-East and North-West regions.
According to her, the ICRC has significantly increased its presence in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states to enhance humanitarian support for affected populations.
