Nigeria Reaffirms Support for Peace in Sudan, Deepens Bilateral Ties

Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to promoting peace and stability in Sudan while strengthening diplomatic relations between both countries.

The assurance was given by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, during a courtesy visit by the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaal, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Ambassador Ahmed emphasized the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Sudan, noting that both nations share deep-rooted connections built on centuries of interaction, migration, and cooperation.

He stressed that Nigeria remains committed to supporting peaceful resolution efforts in Sudan, highlighting the country’s role within the African Union and the broader international community in advocating dialogue and inclusive political processes.

The Sudanese envoy, Mohamed Abdelaal, acknowledged the strong bilateral relationship and commended the integration of Nigerians within Sudanese society. He also provided updates on ongoing recovery efforts in conflict-affected areas, while raising concerns over external interference contributing to the prolonged crisis.

Both diplomats underscored the urgency of ending hostilities through dialogue, warning that instability in Sudan poses wider security risks across Africa, particularly in the Sahel region.

Discussions also focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, including plans to convene the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to address shared interests. The meeting further explored a proposed high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria, as well as measures to safeguard Nigerian assets and support citizens affected by the crisis.

The engagement concluded with a renewed commitment from both countries to deepen diplomatic relations and work collaboratively towards lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
