The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has received the newly gazetted Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Regulations, assuring Nigerians of their immediate and full implementation across the Force.
The regulations were formally handed over on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, by the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, during a ceremony at the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs in Abuja.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the development marks a critical step in Nigeria’s ongoing police reform efforts.
Speaking at the event, the Head of the Police Reform Secretariat, Olu Ogunsakin, described the gazettement as a bridge between the provisions of the Police Act 2020 and real-world policing operations. He noted that it effectively transitions the reform agenda from policy formulation to practical implementation.
In his keynote address, Minister Gaidam reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening institutional reforms within the police, stressing that the regulations align with national security priorities and global best practices.
Responding, IGP Disu described the moment as a significant milestone for the Force. He emphasized that the new regulations, enacted pursuant to Section 138 of the Police Act, 2020, provide a comprehensive framework for professional, accountable, and rights-based policing in Nigeria.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Police Reform Secretariat in supporting the reform process.
The police chief assured that implementation would begin immediately through force-wide dissemination, integration into training curricula, and strict enforcement across all commands and formations. He added that accountability would remain a central pillar of the reform process.
The event drew participation from key stakeholders, including representatives of the Police Service Commission, the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, the Federal Ministry of Justice, UNDP, and various civil society organisations.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to fully implementing the regulations, with a focus on enhancing professionalism, strengthening accountability, and rebuilding public trust in policing nationwide.
