The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have recorded significant operational gains across multiple theatres, neutralizing 31 terrorists and arresting three suspected gun runners between April 17 and 23, 2026.
This was disclosed in a press briefing signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, detailing ongoing nationwide military operations.
According to the report, troops under Operation HADIN KAI in the North East accounted for the highest number of terrorist casualties. A major engagement on April 23 along the Maiduguri–Damaturu Road led to the neutralization of 21 terrorists following a failed attack on troops. Additional operations across Borno and Yobe States brought the total number of terrorists killed in the theatre to 28.
In the North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA troops eliminated one terrorist during ambush operations in Kaduna State, while also dismantling terrorist camps and disrupting logistics networks.
Similarly, Operation ENDURING PEACE in the North Central recorded the killing of two terrorists during an attack on a checkpoint in Plateau State, alongside multiple arrests linked to arms trafficking and violent crimes.
Across all theatres, security forces intensified efforts against arms smuggling networks. Notably, three suspected gun runners and logistics couriers were apprehended in Zamfara and Kogi States while transporting ammunition and improvised explosive device materials.
Despite intensified operations in the Niger Delta under Operation DELTA SAFE, no illegal oil refining sites were destroyed during the period. However, troops intercepted large quantities of illegally refined petroleum products and continued to disrupt economic sabotage activities.
Beyond combat operations, troops also carried out successful rescue missions, freeing kidnapped victims in Borno, Benue, Edo, and Kwara States, while arresting several suspects linked to terrorism, kidnapping, and arms proliferation.
The Chief of Defence Staff commended troops for their professionalism and resilience, while urging sustained momentum in ongoing operations. He also called on the public to support security efforts by providing timely and credible intelligence.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security and maintaining pressure on terrorist and criminal elements across the country.
