The Police Service Commission has enlisted the Police Community Relations Committee as “community watchdogs” to help safeguard the transparency of the recruitment of 50,000 constables into the Nigeria Police Force.
Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the Commission, Torty Njoku Kalu, disclosed this in a press statement issued Thursday following a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja.
The meeting was convened as part of final preparations for the physical and credential screening stage of the recruitment exercise scheduled to begin on Monday, March 9, 2026, across all 36 states and the FCT.
Chairman of the Commission, Hashimu Argungu, commended the PCRC for its longstanding contributions to national security and urged members to bring the same commitment to the recruitment process.
According to him, the Commission is determined to ensure that only credible and qualified Nigerians are recruited into the police.
“The Commission is resolutely poised to ensure that only the finest and most credible Nigerians wear the uniform of a Police Constable. An effective Police Force is built on the quality of its recruitment,” Argungu said.
He tasked PCRC state chairmen to collaborate closely with PSC officials, state employment and career departments, and the Nigeria Police Force State Intelligence Departments to scrutinise applicants, verify indigene-ship and assess character to prevent individuals with questionable backgrounds from entering the Force.
Responding on behalf of the PCRC National Chairman, Ibraheem Olaniyan, ably represented by the Deputy National President (North), Wada Sadiq, expressed appreciation to the Commission for the confidence placed in the Committee.
He assured that the PCRC would fully support the process and remain vigilant in ensuring that only credible Nigerians are recruited into the police.
The meeting attracted PCRC state chairmen from across the federation as well as zonal coordinators. Members of the PSC board present included Paul Adamu Galumje, who represents the judiciary on the Commission, and Taiwo Lakanu, Chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Police Matters.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen public oversight and credibility as the nationwide screening exercise begins.
