The Oyo State Police Command has foiled a highway robbery operation along the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Expressway, arresting one suspected armed robber and recovering a diesel-laden tanker and other stolen property.

The Command, in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the breakthrough was recorded during a joint patrol operation involving police operatives and local vigilantes at Egbeda Village via Ogbomoso.

According to the police, the patrol team encountered a gang of armed robbers who had barricaded the highway and intercepted a tanker loaded with diesel, driven by Surajudeen Sulaiman.

The hoodlums reportedly dispossessed the driver and his motor boys of their valuables before security operatives engaged them in a gun duel as they attempted to flee the scene.

During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects, identified as Dere Yahaya, 32, was arrested, while other members of the gang escaped into the bush with suspected gunshot wounds.

The police said the combined team immediately launched an intensive bush-combing operation and manhunt to track down the fleeing suspects.

The Command described the operation as a major success in its ongoing efforts to tackle highway criminality and protect road users across the state.

Commending the operatives and local security partners for their swift response and bravery, the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property along major highways in Oyo State.

He also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his continued support and guidance in strengthening highway and community policing nationwide.

The police urged residents to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious movements, and continue to support security agencies in the collective effort to maintain peace and public safety.

For emergencies, the Command advised members of the public to contact the Oyo State Call Response Centre via the toll-free line 615, or the Police Control Room on 08081768614 and 07055495413.
