Nigeria Army troops of the 8 Division, operating under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded a major operational success following a decisive offensive against the camp of notorious bandit leader Gwaska Dan Karmi in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The operation, which was intelligence-driven and meticulously coordinated, led to the neutralisation of 20 terrorists and the complete destruction of the criminal stronghold, long identified as a hub for attacks against surrounding communities and security logistics.
According to military sources, the raid followed credible intelligence revealing that more than 100 bandits had assembled at the camp to plan coordinated assaults on nearby villages and reinforce their networks. Troops, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local vigilantes, conducted week-long surveillance before launching the assault.
Contact with the terrorists was established on 31 January 2026, as the armed group attempted to advance. The terrorists engaged the troops in a fierce firefight and attempted a flanking manoeuvre, which was effectively repelled by superior firepower and tactical dominance.
Several terrorists were neutralised on the spot, while others escaped with gunshot wounds. Follow-up operations are ongoing to determine additional casualties and recover more weapons.
Items recovered from the camp include assorted weapons and ammunition, bicycles, food supplies, medical drugs, clothing, detergents, and other logistics materials. The complete destruction of the camp is assessed as a significant setback to terrorist activities and supply chains within the area.
