President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The development was announced in a statement on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, President Tinubu received Egbetokun’s resignation letter earlier in the day, in which the outgoing police chief cited pressing family considerations as the reason for his decision to step down from office.
The President expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation. He commended his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Egbetokun, who was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023, was serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
In view of the current security challenges confronting the country, President Tinubu, acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu to lead the Nigeria Police Force in an acting capacity.
The President expressed confidence that Disu’s operational experience, leadership skills, and professional competence would provide steady and focused direction for the Force at this critical time.
In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His nomination will thereafter be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
