Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating fire incident at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, which claimed several lives on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025.

In a press statement signed by his Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, Governor Soludo described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that turned what should have been a season of joy into a moment of profound grief for many families.

The Governor particularly lamented the loss of three sons of Anambra State — Mr. Steve Onyeka Omatu (40), Mr. Casmir Nnabuike Omatu (39), and Mr. Collins Kenechukwu Omatu (37). The deceased, who were brothers from the Omatu family of Uzoakwa Community in Ihiala Local Government Area, lost their lives while trying to earn an honest living.

Governor Soludo noted that their passing is not only a painful loss to their immediate family but also a collective loss to Anambra State, describing them as hardworking and enterprising young men whose lives were cut short in tragic circumstances.

While commending the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire Service, and other emergency responders for their swift and tireless efforts in rescuing victims and containing the fire, the Governor urged citizens, particularly Anambra indigenes living in Lagos and other parts of the country, to always prioritize human life and personal safety over material possessions during fire outbreaks.

He further called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the inferno and to put in place adequate safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Governor Soludo extended his heartfelt condolences to all affected families and prayed for God’s comfort and strength for them in this difficult time, while also praying that the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.
