As part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has donated ₦100 million, four two-bedroom apartments, and two pickup utility vehicles to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion.
The Governor also donated four cows, 500 bags of rice, and other food items to support Legionnaires and families of fallen heroes, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare.
Governor Sanwo-Olu announced the donations on Monday during the Appeal Fund and Launching of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem at the Lagos House, Ikeja, held at the State Executive Council meeting.
Speaking at the event, the Governor described the Emblem Appeal as a tradition that has come to stay in Nigeria, stressing that remembering fallen heroes is both a constitutional and moral responsibility.
“Our sovereignty as a nation exists because of these brave men and women. The Emblem Appeal is a responsibility we owe to those who laid down their lives for Nigeria and those who returned with life-changing injuries,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He assured the Nigerian Legion of continuous support, noting that the gesture was a tangible expression of gratitude for the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces to preserve the unity and freedom of the country.
Earlier, the Commandant of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, Mr Akeem Wolimoh, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Government for their consistent support, describing Lagos as one of the most supportive states to the Legion nationwide.
According to him, the assistance received over the years has significantly improved the living conditions of Legionnaires, while dependants of members have benefited from skill acquisition and empowerment programmes facilitated by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and other state MDAs.
The event was attended by top government and security officials, including the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. (Mrs) Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro; Chief of Staff, Mr Tayo Ayinde; members of the State Executive Council; and officials of the Nigerian Legion.
Also present were the Commander of Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, Air Commodore M.A. Imam; Commander of 9 Brigade, T.A. Lagbaja Cantonment, Brigadier-General A.O. Owolabi; Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh; and other senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
