The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has dismissed online reports alleging negligence in the case of Cadet Stephen Kubama Gani, who was declared missing earlier this year. The Academy described the circulating claims as misleading and assured the public that due process has been followed since the cadet’s disappearance.
In a statement released Friday night, Major Reuben Kovangiya, the Academy Public Relations Officer, confirmed that Cadet Gani was admitted into the prestigious institution as part of the 76 Regular Course and reported for training on 26 August 2024.
According to the statement, his training progressed smoothly until 28 April 2025, when he was found to be absent from the Academy without official permission.
“In line with established administrative procedures and extant regulations governing cadet conduct, his parents were formally notified three days after his absence,” the Academy said. “Seven days later, after all required protocols were exhausted, he was struck off strength.”
The NDA further revealed that upon contacting his parents, it was discovered that they were also unaware of his whereabouts. This prompted renewed internal investigations by the Academy, which Major Kovangiya confirmed are still ongoing.
The Academy emphasized that the training and administration of cadets are anchored on strict military laws, guidelines, and longstanding traditions. It therefore urged the public to disregard insinuations that no action was taken regarding the cadet’s disappearance.
“The NDA takes the safety and wellbeing of every cadet seriously. Adequate structures are in place to ensure accountability through regular stop checks and physical inspections,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to excellence, discipline, and honour, the NDA noted that it remains steadfast in its mandate to train and produce highly dedicated officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
