Benin Plunges Into Political Turmoil as Soldiers Announce Dissolution of Government

0 Admin

Benin is facing a major political crisis after soldiers early Sunday announced the dissolution of the government in what appears to be a military coup. A group identifying itself as the Military Committee for Refoundation seized the national television station, where they declared President Patrice Talon removed from office.

In their broadcast, the soldiers accused the current administration of “failing the nation” and vowed to “restore national stability and refoundation.” They provided no clear roadmap for a transition, leaving the country and the international community in uncertainty.

The sudden takeover marks a dramatic escalation of political unrest in West Africa, a region that has experienced a troubling rise in military coups in recent years—from Mali and Burkina Faso to Niger and Guinea. Analysts warn that the latest development in Benin could further deepen instability across the sub-region.

As of now, there has been no independent confirmation of the whereabouts or safety of President Talon. Security forces loyal to the government have not made any public response, and communications within parts of the capital reportedly remain disrupted.

Regional bodies, including ECOWAS and the African Union, are expected to issue statements as the situation unfolds. The international community is watching closely as Benin, once considered one of West Africa’s most stable democracies, now grapples with an uncertain political future.
