The Nigerian Army is mourning the painful loss of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a young medical officer whose life was cut short in a heartbreaking domestic tragedy at the Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State.
Lieutenant Haruna, who served as the Regimental Medical Officer of 6 Battalion, sustained severe burns during a domestic dispute with his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna, on September 22, 2025. Despite frantic efforts by colleagues and medical personnel to save him, he succumbed to his injuries on October 7, 2025, at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
In a statement signed by Captain Lawal Bala Muhammad, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 2 Brigade, Uyo, the Nigerian Army expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, describing it as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence.
“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence and reiterates the importance of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and understanding within families,” the statement read.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna. His service, dedication, and compassion as a medical officer will be deeply missed.”
According to preliminary findings, the incident followed a heated argument between the couple, which escalated when Mrs. Haruna allegedly set ablaze household items, leading to an inferno that engulfed parts of their home. Lieutenant Haruna was initially treated at the Battalion Medical Facility before being transferred to the teaching hospital, where he sadly passed on.
The Nigerian Army has called for calm as the military police continue investigations to uncover the full details surrounding the tragedy.
Beyond the grief, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to advocating against domestic violence, emphasizing the need for emotional support systems, counseling, and open communication within homes—especially among military families often under unique pressures of duty and distance.
Lieutenant Haruna’s passing, colleagues say, is not only a personal loss but a reminder that love and understanding must prevail where conflict threatens to destroy.
