Nigeria @65: SWAN Hails Sports Progress, Predicts Brighter Future

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated Nigerians, particularly stakeholders in the sports sector, on the country’s 65th Independence Anniversary, while reflecting on the gains and challenges of sports development.

In a goodwill message issued on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, through the Association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, described Nigeria’s sporting journey as “turbulent but progressive,” noting that recent developments signal hope for a brighter future.

“The past decade and more in Nigeria’s sports ecosystem has been challenging. However, I strongly believe in what the future holds. With the ongoing efforts under the present administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, there is renewed light for Nigerian sports to reclaim its lost glory,” Benjamin said.

He stressed that the country is already beginning to regain global attention, pointing to Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games as a milestone that could mark “a new dawn” for sports in Africa. If successful, Nigeria would become the first African nation to host the Games.

“The last time Nigeria hosted a major international sporting event was in 2003. The absence of such opportunities has cost us immensely in revenue, foreign exchange, and global visibility. Hosting the Commonwealth Games will mark a turning point,” the SWAN President added.

Benjamin also commended the ongoing National Sports Federations elections, applauding the orderly conduct so far and urging both contestants and officials to uphold maturity, transparency, and sportsmanship.

Reaffirming SWAN’s watchdog role, he emphasized the Association’s commitment to ensuring accountability and progress in Nigerian sports.
