The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations of Ghana, Hon. Sam George, has called for a review of the age requirement for enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces, proposing an upper limit of 35 years to allow more young citizens to serve their nation.
Hon. George made the call during a policy dialogue on youth inclusion and national development held in Accra, where he emphasized that the current enlistment age policy excludes many qualified and patriotic Ghanaians eager to contribute to national service.
According to him, reviewing the enlistment criteria would create broader opportunities for Ghana’s youth, many of whom possess critical digital, technical, and leadership skills necessary for modern defense operations.
“We must recognize that patriotism and capacity to serve go beyond age barriers. Many Ghanaians in their early 30s are fit, skilled, and ready to serve. By extending the upper age limit to 35, we can tap into this pool of talent and passion,” the Minister stated.
He further noted that modern military operations increasingly depend on technology, intelligence, and cyber capabilities, areas where Ghanaian youth have demonstrated remarkable potential.
Hon. George urged the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces Council to work with relevant agencies to review existing policies to reflect current realities and global best practices.
Policy analysts and civil society groups have lauded the proposal, describing it as a forward-thinking move that could strengthen national security while promoting inclusivity and equal opportunity in public service.
