Pioneer Nigerian Air Force Officer, Group Captain Pereira, Celebrates 90th Birthday in Grand Style

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Saturday honoured one of its pioneer officers, Group Captain Pereira (rtd), as she marked her 90th birthday in a colourful celebration that drew dignitaries from across the country.

Acting on the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), senior NAF officers and commanders turned out in large numbers to celebrate the trailblazing officer. A giant birthday card, taller than the celebrant, became the centre of attraction, drawing admiration from guests and symbolising the Force’s deep appreciation.

The high point of the occasion was the delivery of a personally signed congratulatory letter from the CAS, which was read to thunderous applause. Additional goodwill messages from the Chief of the Air Staff and the Chief of Medical Services further underscored the institution’s respect for Group Captain Pereira.

In recognition of her pioneering contributions, the NAF presented the retired officer with a commemorative plaque, official publications, and a special gift. The messages were conveyed by senior officials, including the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Logistics Command, and Wing Commander Omodunbi.

The celebration attracted an array of eminent personalities, among them former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, GCON, and his wife; former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Major General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd), mni; and Air Vice Marshal AE Okpere (rtd), one of the pioneer cadets of the 1963 set.

Guests commended the Nigerian Air Force for its strong show of honour, describing Group Captain Pereira as a symbol of courage and inspiration whose legacy continues to shape the history of the service.

The atmosphere was filled with pride and gratitude as colleagues, friends, and family members celebrated the life and achievements of a woman many hailed as a true champion of the Air Force.
