The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has described the Alaba International Market as an emerging technology and commercial hub with growing relevance across Africa.
General Musa stated this on Saturday at the Gala and Award Night marking the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba” in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The Minister said the transformation of the market into a modern commercial centre was a reflection of the vision, resilience and commitment of the Alaba business community.
He commended the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE), particularly its President General, High Chief Dr Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, as well as the Lagos State Government, for their contributions to the development of the market.
According to him, Alaba International Market has evolved beyond its traditional role as a marketplace to become a significant driver of economic growth, employment generation and technological advancement in Nigeria.
General Musa also highlighted efforts by stakeholders in the market to promote quality assurance, encourage locally manufactured products and tackle counterfeit goods, saying the measures would further strengthen Alaba’s reputation as a trusted commercial hub with continental relevance.
The Defence Minister linked security with economic prosperity, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to creating a safe and enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, for his commitment to national security and economic stability, stressing that sustainable development requires strong partnerships between government, businesses and citizens.
General Musa urged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs in the Alaba community to sustain their culture of innovation, integrity and excellence, while encouraging them to continue setting standards capable of positioning Nigerian businesses competitively on the global stage.
He also congratulated the Alaba business community on the unveiling of the new facilities, describing the occasion as a historic milestone and expressing confidence that the market would achieve greater successes in the years ahead.
Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, commended the Alaba International Market community for its contribution to the state’s economy through commerce, innovation and employment generation.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reconstructing the road linking the market, noting that the project would improve accessibility, ease business activities and further stimulate economic growth in the area.
The event also featured the recognition of individuals whose contributions have supported the growth and development of the Alaba International Market.
The International Market Association Electronics (IMAE) has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Nigerian Army spanning several decades, a relationship reportedly facilitated by General Musa during his early years as a military officer.
