Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have foiled an attempted motorcycle snatching and peacefully resolved a farmer-herder dispute in separate operations in Plateau State, reinforcing ongoing efforts to enhance security and prevent communal unrest.
Security sources disclosed that troops of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace, rescued a motorcycle rider who sustained machete injuries during an attempted robbery in Mangu Local Government Area.
The incident occurred at about 8:05 p.m. on July 15 while troops of Sub-Sector 81, Gyambwas, were conducting a routine patrol along the Chanso–Gebrel Road.
According to the sources, the troops responded swiftly after hearing cries for help from a distressed individual. Upon arriving at the scene, they sighted two suspects fleeing into the surrounding bush, abandoning both the victim and his motorcycle.
The victim, identified as 28-year-old Aron Irimiya, sustained machete cuts during the attack. He told the troops that the assailants had attempted to dispossess him of his motorcycle before fleeing upon sighting the security personnel.
The troops immediately evacuated the injured victim to a Primary Health Centre, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Military sources said efforts are underway to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, while security patrols have been intensified across the area to deter further criminal activities.
In a separate operation, troops of Sector 1, Operation Enduring Peace, successfully intervened in a farmland grazing incident in Jos East Local Government Area, preventing the situation from escalating into violence.
The incident occurred at about 7:50 p.m. on July 15 when troops on night patrol intercepted 11 cows grazing on farmland belonging to Meshak Abdul along the Gora Village Road.
The troops promptly moved the livestock to a safe location to prevent further destruction of crops and avert any breakdown of law and order.
Security sources said the owner of the cattle, Muhogi Idris, was contacted by the troops, after which both parties engaged in dialogue facilitated by the security personnel.
The dispute was resolved amicably, with both the farmer and the livestock owner reaching a peaceful settlement.
Military authorities noted that the interventions reflect Operation Enduring Peace’s sustained commitment to combating violent crime, promoting peaceful coexistence, and preventing isolated disputes from degenerating into wider communal conflicts across Plateau State. - By Zagazola Makama
