The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), Kwara State Command, has returned an out-of-school girl to the classroom after paying her outstanding school fees, in a move that underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to preventive policing and youth development.
The intervention aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, to address the root causes of crime through early intervention, education, and community engagement.
The girl was discovered by the Kwara State POCACOV Coordinator and members of his team while hawking groundnuts during official school hours. Concerned about her absence from school, the officers engaged her in conversation and learned that she had been forced to drop out because her parents could not afford her school fees.
Determined to restore her hope, the POCACOV team assured the girl that assistance would be provided. They subsequently visited ERO OMO Secondary School, Ilorin, where they settled all her outstanding fees, enabling her to resume her education.
The management of the school commended the Nigeria Police Force and POCACOV for the timely intervention, describing the gesture as an act of compassion that has given the young girl a renewed opportunity to pursue her education and build a brighter future.
The initiative reflects POCACOV’s broader strategy of preventing crime by addressing social challenges that expose young people to criminality. Through education, mentorship, and community-based interventions, the programme seeks to provide vulnerable children with positive opportunities while promoting safer communities.
The Nigeria Police Force noted that the intervention demonstrates its commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society and ensuring that financial hardship does not deny children access to education.
