The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening international policing cooperation as a vital tool for promoting global peace, security, and sustainable development.
Disu made the commitment while participating in the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026), held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from July 7 to 8, 2026.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, the summit brought together ministers, inspectors-general of police, chiefs of police, and senior representatives of regional and professional policing organisations from around the world to deliberate on strategies for enhancing international peace, security, and development through stronger collaboration between national police services and United Nations policing.
Speaking during the summit, the Nigerian police chief highlighted the growing complexity of transnational crime, noting that criminal networks now exploit artificial intelligence, encrypted communications, and cyber-enabled platforms to operate across borders with increasing sophistication, posing significant challenges to conventional policing methods.
IGP Disu stressed that while emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital forensics, and geospatial intelligence provide valuable opportunities for law enforcement, public trust remains the cornerstone of effective policing.
He maintained that technological innovation must be deployed in ways that promote transparency, accountability, respect for human rights, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
The Inspector-General also called for deeper international cooperation, sustained capacity building, and equitable access to advanced digital policing capabilities for all countries. He emphasized that the benefits of technological advancement should not be restricted to only a handful of technologically advanced nations.
Nigeria’s participation at UNCOPS 2026, the statement noted, reflects the country’s continued commitment to supporting global peacekeeping efforts, strengthening international law enforcement partnerships, and contributing to coordinated responses against transnational crime, terrorism, cybercrime, and other emerging security threats.
