The Police in Ebonyi State have launched a manhunt for suspected robbers who attacked a female hostel at the School of Health Technology, Ngbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
Police sources said the incident occurred in the early hours of June 9 when unidentified hoodlums reportedly gained access to the school premises through an unfenced section of the institution and robbed students of their belongings.
According to the sources, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ohaukwu Division received a distress call from the provost of the institution reporting the incident.
“The suspects reportedly entered the girls’ hostel through an unfenced part of the school and dispossessed students of valuables, including mobile phones, before fleeing the scene,” the source said.
Following the report, the DPO led a team of police operatives to the institution for an on-the-spot assessment and preliminary investigation.
The sources said the officers met with a student, Okabeh Chukwudi, a 200-level Environmental Studies student, and Mr Nnanna Eze, a lecturer in the English Language Department, who both confirmed that the robbery had taken place.
Police authorities said the number of items stolen and their monetary value were yet to be fully ascertained and verified.
They added that surveillance patrols had been intensified around the institution and its environs due to the absence of a perimeter fence around parts of the school.
According to the police, discreet investigations and intelligence-gathering efforts are ongoing to identify, track and arrest the perpetrators.
The authorities assured students and staff of the institution of their commitment to ensuring their safety and bringing those responsible for the crime to justice.
They also advised educational institutions and community leaders to strengthen security measures around vulnerable facilities while continuing to collaborate with security agencies.
