The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have described the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as a key partner in national security, saying responsible and ethical journalism remains vital to peacebuilding and national unity.
This was contained in an Easter message delivered on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, at an Easter programme organised by the NUJ under the theme, “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life.”
Representing the CDS at the event, the Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja conveyed warm greetings to the NUJ and commended the union for organising a programme that brought together faith, patriotism and professional responsibility.
He said Easter, which marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ, symbolises the triumph of life over death, truth over falsehood and hope over despair.
According to him, the message of Easter remains relevant to Nigeria at a time the country continues to face security and socio-economic challenges.
He said, “Like the journey from Calvary to the empty tomb, our national experience teaches us that trials are not permanent and that renewal is always possible when faith and unity prevail.”
The CDS said the Armed Forces of Nigeria continue to draw strength from these values as troops remain engaged in defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity across various theatres of operation.
He noted that military personnel were actively involved in combating terrorism and insurgency, tackling banditry, safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and supporting civil authorities during emergencies.
He added that the sacrifices of troops had made it possible for communities previously threatened by violence to begin experiencing restoration, with schools reopening, farmers returning to their lands, businesses resuming and displaced families rebuilding their lives.
The Armed Forces also acknowledged the role of the media in shaping public perception and strengthening national cohesion.
The CDS said security operations were no longer fought only on the battlefield but also in the information space, stressing that accurate, responsible and ethical reporting helps to counter misinformation and build public trust.
He described journalists as indispensable partners in national security, noting that verified reports and balanced narratives contribute directly to peacebuilding.
“The media contribute directly to peacebuilding by projecting verified facts, highlighting the sacrifices of security personnel, and discouraging narratives that incite fear or division,” he said.
The Armed Forces, he added, would continue to engage transparently and professionally with the press.
He also called on Nigerians to embrace reconciliation, compassion and collective responsibility, stressing that security was not the responsibility of the military alone.
According to him, citizens, community leaders, religious institutions and the media all have important roles to play in promoting peace and supporting national security efforts.
The CDS further paid tribute to fallen military personnel who died in the line of duty, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices would not be forgotten.
He urged Nigerians to continue praying for troops in operational theatres across the country and for lasting peace in the nation.
Looking ahead, he said the Armed Forces remained committed to improving operational effectiveness, strengthening inter-agency collaboration and leveraging modern capabilities to address emerging threats.
He reaffirmed the military’s resolve to ensure that every Nigerian can live in safety, dignity and hope.
The Easter message ended with a call for renewed faith in God, confidence in Nigeria and commitment to building a secure, united and prosperous nation.
