The Alumni Association of the 27 Short Service Combatant Course (SSC 27) of the Nigerian Defence Academy has celebrated its 40th anniversary in Abuja, calling for sustained unity, good health, and stronger camaraderie among members.
The milestone event, held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, brought together retired and serving military officers, dignitaries, and invited guests in a reunion that highlighted four decades of service and shared experiences.
Representing the Honourable Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, Major General Bala Isandu (Rtd) conveyed the Minister’s goodwill to members. He described SSC 27 as a distinguished course that has made significant contributions to the Armed Forces of Nigeria through service in various operational theatres, command appointments, and national assignments.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made by members, including those who paid the supreme price, noting that their contributions remain an integral part of Nigeria’s military history and national development.
In his remarks, the President of the Alumni Association, retired Major General Okechukwu Ugo, said the anniversary offered an opportunity for reflection, reconnection, and appreciation of the journey since members commenced training at the Nigerian Defence Academy in March 1986.
He noted that members of the course have risen to occupy key positions within and outside the military, including senior command roles, participation in international peacekeeping missions, and leadership roles in civil and traditional institutions.
The reunion featured a health awareness lecture titled “Geriatric Health: Mind and Body,” delivered by Prof. Ehiz Odigie-Okpataku and Dr. Okiobeya Davidson. Ugo emphasised the importance of the lecture, urging members to remain receptive to knowledge that supports improved well-being.
He also disclosed that spouses of members carried out a humanitarian visit to an orphanage in Kuje, where they donated food items and household materials. He described the gesture as a reflection of compassion and social responsibility in line with the association’s values.
The event included a minute of silence in honour of deceased members, as well as appreciation for the role of families—particularly spouses—in supporting officers throughout their careers.
Ugo further announced that elections would be conducted to usher in new executives, expressing confidence in a transparent and credible process as the current leadership prepares to hand over.
The celebration concluded with a gala night, providing an avenue for relaxation and renewed bonding among members. A major highlight of the evening was the presentation of a special song composed by retired Major General I.M. Obot in honour of SSC 27, symbolising the enduring unity and legacy of the course.
The event was attended by representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff, alongside senior military officers, alumni members, and other distinguished guests.
