The recent approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the upward review of salaries of personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria has been widely welcomed within the military community. The appreciation expressed by the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, reflects a broader sense of relief and renewed confidence among service members who continue to shoulder the enormous responsibility of safeguarding the nation.
Beyond being a policy announcement, the decision represents a strategic investment in national security, military morale, and operational effectiveness
The CDS conveyed the appreciation through the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Waidi Shaibu, who was represented at an interfaith breaking of fast held with members of the Armed Forces at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Speaking during the event, the CDS commended the President for several welfare-focused approvals which he said had significantly improved the morale and operational efficiency of the Armed Forces.
“I want to appreciate the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for the auspicious opportunity of marking the breaking of fast for both faiths. This unique period offers us the opportunity to renew our service and our commitments to our fatherland,” he said. The defence chief also thanked the President for initiatives aimed at strengthening the welfare and capacity of military personnel.
According to him, the approvals extend beyond salary adjustments to include the procurement of modern equipment and the provision of decent accommodation for service members.
“These various approvals also extend to the areas of equipment procurement as well as the provision of decent accommodation for members of the Armed Forces. These laudable approvals will go a long way in enhancing our operational efficiency, and I assure you that they are well received by all members of the Armed Forces,” he said.
A Boost to Morale and Professional Commitment
For years, military personnel have operated under extremely demanding conditions. From counter-terrorism operations in the North-East to anti-banditry missions in the North-West and internal security deployments across the country, Nigerian troops remain on the frontlines of national stability.
Improving salaries and allowances sends a powerful signal that the government recognizes the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families. When personnel feel valued and adequately supported, their motivation, loyalty, and dedication to duty naturally increase.
Higher compensation also strengthens professionalism within the ranks. Soldiers who are confident that their welfare is being prioritized are better positioned to focus on operational objectives rather than personal financial concerns.
Strengthening National Security Capacity
The salary review is part of a broader welfare package that includes improved allowances for personnel of the Guards Brigade, better accommodation, and investment in modern equipment.
These initiatives collectively strengthen the operational capability of the military. Adequate welfare provisions help reduce stress among personnel, improve concentration during missions, and foster stronger unit cohesion.
A well-motivated military is also more resilient in confronting evolving security threats such as insurgency, terrorism, and organized crime. When soldiers are properly equipped and adequately compensated, the effectiveness of military operations improves significantly.
Supporting Families Behind the Uniform
Every soldier represents a family that shares in the burden of military service. Deployments often mean long periods away from loved ones, exposure to danger, and uncertainty about the future.
Improved salaries and allowances help provide financial stability for these families. Access to decent housing, better healthcare, and improved living conditions contributes to the overall wellbeing of military households.
When families are secure and supported, soldiers can focus more effectively on their duties without the distraction of unresolved financial pressures.
Why Government Should Continue Improving Military Welfare
While the recent salary review is commendable, it should be seen as part of a sustained commitment to military welfare.
There are several reasons why continued improvements in soldiers’ compensation remain important:
1. Risk and Sacrifice
Military personnel operate in life-threatening environments. Their compensation should reflect the extraordinary risks they face in defending the nation.
2. Recruitment and Retention
Competitive salaries help attract skilled individuals into the armed forces and reduce attrition among experienced personnel.
3. Reducing Corruption and Vulnerability
Adequate pay can reduce financial pressures that sometimes make security personnel vulnerable to corruption or exploitation.
4. Enhancing Operational Readiness
Financial stability allows soldiers to maintain focus, discipline, and readiness during complex military operations.
A Step Toward a Stronger Armed Forces
The appreciation expressed by the leadership of the Armed Forces highlights how significant the salary review is for personnel morale. It also underscores the importance of sustained government support for those tasked with defending Nigeria.
As security challenges evolve, strengthening the welfare of soldiers will remain essential. Investments in salaries, housing, healthcare, training, and equipment are not merely benefits for military personnel—they are investments in the safety, stability, and future of the nation.
The recent decision therefore represents not just a welfare reform, but a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to honouring and supporting those who stand in defence of the country every day.
