Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former two-term councilor at Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council in Lagos State, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, following intelligence linking him to illicit drug trafficking.
The 45-year-old former council official, who currently serves as a legislative aide, was apprehended on Monday, March 2, 2026, at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.
According to a statement issued by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, a search conducted at the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, from one of the rooms in the house.
Babafemi said the suspect admitted ownership of both the drugs and the property where they were recovered. He also confirmed that he had previously served two terms as a councilor representing the Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council.
Drugs Hidden in Baby Diapers
In a separate operation in the Abuja, NDLEA officers on Tuesday, March 3, intercepted a 32-year-old businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, travelling from Obollo-Afor in Enugu State to Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory.
A search of his luggage revealed 1,000 pills of Tapentadol 250mg carefully concealed inside baby diapers.
The suspect reportedly admitted ownership of the consignment and disclosed that he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, where he operates a provision store.
Cameroonian Arrested With Colorado in Kogi
Also on March 3, NDLEA operatives on patrol along the Kabba–Obajana highway in Kogi State intercepted a commercial bus travelling from Lagos to Cameroon.
During the operation, officers recovered 1.55 kilograms of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis, concealed inside a standing fan carton belonging to a 36-year-old Cameroonian national, Mey Ali Muhamat.
The suspect, who hails from Maroua in the Republic of Cameroon, was reportedly travelling through Lokoja, Kano, and Maiduguri en route to Cameroon.
500 IED Components Intercepted in Niger
In another operation, NDLEA operatives on patrol along the Mokwa–Jebba road in Niger State intercepted a commercial bus travelling from Ibadan carrying 500 components used in the fabrication of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed inside a white sack.
A swift follow-up operation led to the arrest of the intended recipient, 21-year-old Osama Abdullahi, at Pelegi in Mashegu Local Government Area of the state.
Additional Drug Seizures Across States
In Adamawa State, NDLEA officers in Yola discovered 122,000 pills of tramadol and 700 grams of methamphetamine hidden in the false bottom of a truck marked ENU 645XX that was conveying 2,000 cartons of local drinks.
Similarly, a suspect, Muhammed Ali, 20, was arrested at Gadar Tamburawa in Kano State with 11,283 pills of tramadol.
In Ogun State, NDLEA operatives carried out a raid in Ogere where two suspects, Nazifi Mudansir and Kabiru Musa, were arrested with 46 kilograms of skunk.
In Delta State, two suspects, Joy Chukwuma, 25, and Eugene Felix, 22, were apprehended at Ogwashi-Uku with 18.63 kilograms of skunk, 10.8 litres of codeine-based syrup, and 4,268 pills of tramadol and swinol.
Meanwhile, in Edo State, NDLEA operatives arrested 48-year-old Eke London and his accomplice, Austin Isusi, 49, at Egbisi Forest in Uhumwonde Local Government Area, where 1,910.25 kilograms of skunk cultivated on two farms were destroyed.
Another suspect, Alaba Adeboye, 47, was arrested in Ikhin town, Owan East Local Government Area with 176.50 kilograms of skunk.
NDLEA Continues Anti-Drug Campaign
Beyond enforcement operations, the NDLEA continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign through sensitization programmes in schools, workplaces, and communities across the country.
These included awareness lectures in institutions such as Government Senior College Apata in Ibadan, Government Girls Secondary School Katcha in Niger State, Sango Junior Secondary School Agege in Lagos, and several other schools across Zamfara, Sokoto, Ebonyi, and Anambra states.
The NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers and personnel of the Lagos, FCT, Kano, Niger, Kogi, Edo, Ogun, Delta, and Adamawa commands for their efforts.
He urged them to sustain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control, combining enforcement actions with preventive education and public awareness campaigns.
