The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has handed over two suspected stowaways rescued from a merchant vessel, MV Seapan Lahore, to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Lagos for further investigation and necessary action.
The suspects were formally transferred to officials of the Lagos Ports and Marine Command in Apapa following their rescue from the vessel.
According to reports, the two men were discovered in the early hours of Thursday, 19 March 2026, concealed in the rudder compartment of the merchant ship during routine security checks by naval personnel. The vessel was said to be at the Lagos Fairway Buoy when the discovery was made.
Naval authorities said the suspects were safely extracted from the compartment and taken to the naval base for preliminary questioning.
Initial investigations identified the individuals as Abdullahi Yakubu, 36, and Omoniyi Afotona, 25. Authorities disclosed that Yakubu is a repeat offender. Both men are believed to have gained unauthorized access to the vessel at Apapa Port before its departure.
The Nigerian Navy used the incident to reiterate its warning against illegal migration, stressing that stowing away on ships is not only unlawful but also highly dangerous due to the life-threatening conditions involved.
It also called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to educate young people on the risks associated with illegal migration and to encourage those seeking opportunities abroad to explore safe and lawful channels of travel.
Reaffirming its commitment to maritime security, the command said the Navy remains resolute in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain. It added that under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Service will continue to maintain a professional and motivated force capable of protecting national maritime interests and supporting wider national security operations.
