Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has declared open a two-day Executive Leadership Retreat for Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs), describing the gathering as a major step in the ongoing reform and institutional transformation of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The retreat, hosted by the Police Reform Secretariat in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is taking place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, and is aimed at strengthening strategic leadership within the Force.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the retreat brings together the top echelon of the NPF to align leadership priorities around accountability, operational efficiency, discipline, and public trust.
Speaking during the opening session, the Head of the Police Reform Secretariat and Director General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Professor Olu Ogunsakin, outlined key gains recorded under the Supporting Police Accountability and Transformation (SPAT) programme, which is funded by the UNDP and the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO).
Among the notable reforms unveiled are a fully revised national police recruit curriculum — the first major review since 1968 — and a newly gazetted Nigeria Police Regulations 2025, described as a modern, rights-based framework designed to reposition policing in line with democratic and professional standards.
In his remarks, IGP Disu said the retreat forms a critical part of his policy agenda focused on delivering sustainable and positive reform across the Force.
He charged the senior officers to embrace visionary leadership, accountability, and professionalism, stressing that their roles must inspire public confidence and translate into measurable improvements across commands nationwide.
The police chief noted that the true success of the retreat would be seen in concrete progress in operational performance, internal discipline, and respect for human rights in police operations throughout the country.
The retreat will feature technical sessions on evidence-based budgeting, community policing strategies, and digital transformation, all geared towards building a more transparent, people-centred, and rule-of-law-driven police institution.
As the programme continues through March 25, the Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its appreciation to the UNDP and other international partners for their continued support in advancing reforms and strengthening Nigeria’s policing ecosystem.
