The Ogun State Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has confirmed the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, describing his exit as the end of a distinguished and impactful tenure in the Nigeria Police Force.
The committee in a press statement signed by the Ogun State PRO, Chief Babatunde Odeyemi, the IGP Egberokun’s departure was also confirmed by the presidency, citing family considerations as the reason for his resignation. Appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 19, 2023, Egbetokun made history as the first indigenous Inspector-General of Police from Ogun State.
According to the Chairman, Ven Dr Samson Kunle Popoola his leadership recorded significant security gains and reforms across the country, earning him respect within and outside the force.
Ogun State’s Gratitude To Its Son
The committee expressed pride in Egbetokun’s deep connection to Ogun State, highlighting his contributions to strengthening security in the state.
During an official visit to Abeokuta in April 2024, the former IGP praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for his investments in security, describing Ogun as one of the most peaceful and safest states in Nigeria.
He also demonstrated his support by partnering with the state government to enhance policing capacity, including the donation of 25 patrol vehicles and a surveillance drone to the Ogun State Police Command.
Governor Abiodun had described his appointment as a privilege for the state, commending his intelligence, capacity, and strong sense of duty. The Ogun PCRC said the people of the state remain grateful for his contributions and unwavering support.
Key Achievements During Tenure
The committee highlighted several achievements recorded during Egbetokun’s time as IGP.
Under his leadership, the Nigeria Police Force achieved notable crime-fighting successes, including the arrest of over 30,000 suspects and the rescue of more than 1,500 kidnapped victims nationwide.
He also established a Special Intervention Squad to tackle armed robbery and kidnapping, while overseeing infrastructure development such as the commissioning of the Nigerian Police Resource Centre in Abuja, construction of a new police headquarters building in Ogun State, and rehabilitation of police barracks across the country.
The PCRC further noted his emphasis on intelligence-led policing, which led to the rescue of hundreds of abductees and the arrest of thousands of criminal suspects within a short period.
Community policing also received significant attention under his administration, with strengthened collaboration between the police and communities, boosting trust and improving public safety.
PCRC Leadership Commends His Service
Chairman of the Ogun State PCRC, Venerable (Dr.) Samson Kunle Popoola, JP, described Egbetokun’s tenure as inspiring and impactful.
He said the former IGP exemplified the highest ideals of service and duty, adding that his leadership brought honour to Ogun State and improved security in communities.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to build on the progress achieved.
It expressed confidence that the strong foundation of public safety laid during Egbetokun’s tenure would be sustained, while wishing him and his family success in future endeavours.
The Ogun PCRC concluded that his legacy of professionalism and dedication would continue to inspire officers and stakeholders in the security sector.
