News Flash: Court Refuses To Hear Ex-Governor El-Rufai’s Bail Application, Adjourns Case To April 23, 2026.

A High Court on Wednesday declined to hear the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in an ongoing criminal proceeding, adjourning the matter to April 23, 2026.

The court’s decision followed preliminary objections raised by the prosecution, which argued that the bail application was premature and that key legal processes must first be concluded before any consideration of the request.

During the session, counsel to the former governor urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, stressing that his client had consistently demonstrated respect for the rule of law and was willing to cooperate with the judicial process. The defence further maintained that El-Rufai poses no flight risk and should be allowed to prepare for trial outside custody.

However, the prosecution opposed the application, insisting that the gravity of the charges and the ongoing investigations require that the former governor remain in custody pending the determination of preliminary issues before the court.

In his ruling, the presiding judge held that the court would not entertain the bail application at this stage, noting that it must first resolve jurisdictional and procedural matters raised in the case. He subsequently adjourned proceedings to April 23, 2026, for the hearing of the pending motions.

The development has drawn significant public and political attention, with supporters and critics of the former governor expressing mixed reactions. Security was tightened around the court premises as the proceedings concluded.

The case is expected to continue with further legal arguments when the court reconvenes in April.
