The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with a case of alleged culpable homicide in the Byazhin area of Abuja.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 16, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the incident was reported to the Byazhin Divisional Headquarters at about 11:45 p.m. on February 12, 2026.
According to the statement, the distress call indicated that one Chidera Benjamin, aged 16, of Byazhin Across, had allegedly inflicted a severe machete injury on his mother during a domestic dispute. Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene upon receiving the report.
Preliminary investigations revealed that two neighbours, Cosmos Okafor, aged 31, and Okechukwu Wisdom, aged 17, allegedly attacked the teenager in reaction to the incident.
Further findings showed that the altercation stemmed from allegations that Chidera had been transferring funds from his mother’s bank account into his personal Opay account without her consent. When his mother confronted him over the alleged unauthorized transactions, he reportedly became violent and attacked her with a machete, causing serious injury to her hand.
The suspects, who reportedly witnessed the confrontation, allegedly assaulted the teenager, during which he sustained severe injuries and became unconscious. He was subsequently rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The police said both suspects were promptly arrested and are currently in custody.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, while commiserating with the family, urged residents to adopt peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
He warned that actions taken in moments of anger often result in tragic and irreversible consequences.
The command assured that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
