The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to enhance the intellectual and operational preparedness of its officers with the conduct of a one-day Officers’ Study Period in Enugu, aimed at equipping personnel with knowledge and skills to address emerging security challenges in the country.
The study period, held at the Abakpa Cantonment Auditorium, formed part of the Nigerian Army’s 2026 training directives designed to strengthen officers’ intellectual capacity and professional competence in a rapidly evolving security environment.
This was disclosed in a press statement by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni.
In his opening remarks, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division and Commander, Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General OA Fadairo, welcomed the Special Guest of Honour, senior officers and participants, emphasizing the Nigerian Army’s commitment to developing a force that is not only physically strong but also intellectually prepared.
According to him, contemporary security challenges require officers who are tactically proficient, strategically aware and intellectually grounded.
He explained that the study period was designed to deepen officers’ understanding of emerging threats, sharpen their analytical and decision-making abilities, and draw lessons from past and ongoing operations to enhance leadership capacity and operational effectiveness.
Speaking on the theme, “Understanding Contemporary Security Challenges as a Panacea for Operational Effectiveness of the Nigerian Army in a Dynamic Threat Environment,” Major General Fadairo noted that the programme aligns with the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy to advance the transformation of the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of effectively discharging its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment.
He encouraged participants to actively engage in discussions, share operational experiences and contribute constructively during the sessions. The GOC also appreciated the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W Shaibu, for his visionary leadership and sustained support for training and professional development across the Nigerian Army.
The first lecture was delivered by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations and Training, Headquarters 82 Division, Colonel MI Abdulrahaman, who examined the subject of United States military intervention in Northwest Nigeria, its implications for Nigerian Army operations and lessons for future engagements.
The session explored strategic options available to the Federal Government, including strengthening information warfare, promoting regional cooperation and enhancing institutional capacity. Participants also gained insights on controlling operational narratives and improving institutional growth.
In his closing remarks, the Special Guest of Honour, the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command, Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal AG Kehinde, commended the leadership of Major General Fadairo for prioritising intellectual engagements, describing them as critical to sustaining operational effectiveness in today’s complex security environment.
The event also featured lectures by Professor Innocent Ahamefule Nwosu, who spoke on “Future Threat Trajectories in the South-East Region: Growing Organised Crime Groups, Maritime Vulnerabilities and Porous Border Challenges.”
The study period brought together senior military officers and stakeholders, further reinforcing inter-agency collaboration and knowledge sharing in tackling security challenges across the country.
