The FCT Police Command, under the leadership of Miller G. Dantawaye, has recorded significant operational successes in its sustained fight against vandals, economic saboteurs, and drug-related offenders across Abuja.
Over the past few months, criminal networks have increasingly targeted critical public infrastructure, including underground power cables, internet facilities, and drainage covers. These acts of sabotage have not only disrupted electricity and internet services within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) but also posed serious public safety risks and affected neighbouring states.
In response to the rising threat, the FCT Police Command intensified intelligence-driven operations, deploying targeted patrols and surveillance teams to identified hotspots such as Mabushi, Maitama, and the Central Business District. According to police sources, these proactive measures were designed to dismantle organized syndicates rather than merely respond to isolated incidents.
The strategy has paid off.
During coordinated operations, police operatives arrested multiple suspects and recovered a cache of stolen and illicit items, including:
296 cut-to-size single-core armored underground power cables, valued at ₦31.14 million
171 stolen drainage (manhole) covers
4 portable cable pullers
2 electric transformers
52 bags of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa
Security experts say the scale and variety of recovered items suggest a well-organized criminal supply chain involving vandals, middlemen, and buyers who profit from stolen public assets.
Investigations are ongoing to track down receivers, buyers, and other collaborators linked to the recovered items. The Command has reiterated that prosecution will not stop at the point of arrest, warning that anyone involved in trading or concealing stolen public infrastructure will face the full weight of the law.
“This operation sends a clear message,” a senior police officer noted. “Those who profit from vandalizing public assets are endangering lives and undermining development. They will be identified and held accountable.”
The FCT Police Command has also called on residents to remain vigilant and partner with law enforcement by providing timely and credible information. Community cooperation, the Command emphasized, remains critical to sustaining the gains recorded so far.
