The Delta State Police Command has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jesse Division, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, following allegations of extortion amounting to ₦2.5 million levelled against him and two other officers.
The action follows a viral video in which a woman alleged that an officer identified as Bright, Officer Usman, and the Jesse DPO collected ₦2,500,000 from her on the promise of securing the release of her younger brother from police custody.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, said the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, after reviewing the video and listening to the complaint, directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the X-Squad to commence a thorough investigation into the allegation.
According to the statement, the incident dates back to January 1, 2026, when the youth leader of the Jesse community arrested some suspects and handed them over to the police. Among them was the complainant’s younger brother, later identified as Israel Onojeruo, aged 20. His arrest followed a confession by another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who allegedly admitted to selling a firearm to him. The suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) for further investigation.
However, in response to the extortion allegation, the Commissioner of Police ordered the detention of the constable identified as Bright at the Command Headquarters, while the DPO was removed from his position and redeployed to the headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation. The police said the redeployment also followed a series of complaints of extortion and unprofessional conduct previously raised against the DPO from different quarters.
The CP assured members of the public that if the investigation establishes any act of misconduct, the officers involved would be decisively dealt with in line with the Police Act and extant regulations to serve as a deterrent to others.
He further reiterated that the command under his leadership would not tolerate extortion, intimidation, incivility, or any form of unprofessional behaviour by officers, urging the public to report complaints through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit via the following numbers: 09011112311, 09155570008, 09064308018, and 09066575187.
