Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance defence and military cooperation between both countries, marking a major step in strengthening bilateral security ties.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, on behalf of Nigeria, and the Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari, representing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In a statement signed by Enderline Chukwu, Assistant Director (Information and PR) for the Director of Information and PR, the Ministry described the MoU as a milestone achievement

Dr. Matawalle noted that the agreement had been in development for some time and expressed confidence that its implementation would enhance Nigeria’s defence architecture and build the capacity of the Armed Forces.

The MoU will run for an initial period of five years, with the option for review and renewal for an additional five-year term. It also allows either party to terminate the agreement by providing three months’ written notice through diplomatic channels.

The pact creates a broad framework for cooperation in areas such as training, joint exercises, intelligence sharing, logistics, technical assistance, and other mutually agreed defence activities.

According to the Ministry, Nigeria stands to gain significantly from the partnership, including expanded training opportunities, improved operational effectiveness through joint drills, and enhanced collaboration in counter-terrorism and internal security operations.

The Ministry of Defence welcomed the agreement as a strategic instrument that will support Nigeria’s long-term security, stability, and ongoing defence modernization efforts.
