Nigeria has once again asserted its leadership in West Africa, deploying air assets to the Republic of Benin as part of an ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) mission following a failed coup attempt that briefly rattled the normally stable nation on Sunday.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is sustaining operations in support of Benin’s democratic institutions after a group of mutinous soldiers seized national television and announced the removal of President Patrice Talon. Working in close coordination with Beninese authorities and in line with ECOWAS protocols, NAF aircraft are providing strategic airlift, aerial surveillance, and rapid-response support to ensure the situation remains fully under control.
Benin’s Interior Minister, Alassane Seidou, confirmed that the attempted power grab was swiftly neutralised.
“The Beninese Armed Forces and their leadership, true to their oath, remained committed to the republic,” he said in a televised address aimed at calming public anxiety.
The soldiers—calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation—had dissolved state institutions and declared a new order before loyal forces overpowered them. Dozens of suspects, including the alleged masterminds, have since been arrested.
ECOWAS authorised the multinational deployment under Article 25(e) of its 1999 Mechanism Protocol, which empowers the bloc to intervene when constitutional order is threatened. The regional force includes troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana, with a mandate to support the Government and Republican Army of Benin in preserving constitutional governance and safeguarding territorial integrity.
Analysts say the swift activation of the Standby Force marks a renewed determination by ECOWAS to curb the resurgence of military takeovers across West Africa. Drawing on the architecture of the African Standby Force, the ESF is designed for rapid reaction in moments of political crisis, and the Benin incident has provided a crucial test of its readiness.
Security experts note that Benin’s strategic location in the Gulf of Guinea, combined with the wave of coups that has swept through the Sahel, made a decisive response necessary. The successful pushback, they argue, may become a model for future interventions as ECOWAS works to reassert its credibility after recent setbacks.
For Nigeria, the deployment reinforces its historic role as a stabilising force in the sub-region. Abuja has long championed collective security under the ECOWAS framework, and NAF’s involvement signals its continuing commitment to maintaining peace and constitutional order in neighbouring states.
In Cotonou, residents expressed relief as normalcy returned. A shopkeeper near the ORTB headquarters, where the mutineers first appeared, said:
“For a moment, we thought our country would follow the path of others that lost democracy. But the army stood by the people.”
Civil society groups and university students have also praised the rapid communication from government authorities and the support offered by ECOWAS, crediting the coordinated response with preventing wider unrest.
As investigations continue and the government works to reassure the public, the events in Benin serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of democratic institutions in a region grappling with political uncertainty. But for now, the swift regional intervention has reinforced the message that unconstitutional changes of government will not go unchallenged in West Africa.
