NAF Commissions Space Research Laboratory, School Projects in Kwara to Boost National Development

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has strengthened its contribution to national development with the commissioning of major Special Intervention Projects (SIP) in Kwara State, underscoring its expanding role in education, research, and community welfare.

Executed under the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the projects include a cutting-edge Advanced Space Composite Laboratory (ASCO LAB) at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and critical education infrastructure upgrades at JNI College (JNIC), Babanloma. The initiatives were coordinated by Air Vice Marshal Lanre Ibrahim Oluwatoyin (rtd) in honour of his service to the nation.

In a statement, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the ASCO LAB was developed through a collaboration between NAF and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).

The facility is designed to serve as a national centre for composite materials research, space science, and aerospace innovation. It is expected to bolster Nigeria’s capacity in space technology, defence readiness, and applied scientific research. To ease access to the facility, the NAF also constructed a 700-metre tarred road linking the laboratory to surrounding communities.

The second phase of the intervention focused on improving foundational education in Babanloma. The Service constructed and furnished a modern nursery and primary school complex at JNIC, upgraded the school’s digital learning centre with solar-powered ICT facilities, and renovated the NYSC Corpers’ Lodge to enhance the welfare of youth corps members serving in the community.

The projects are aimed at promoting early childhood learning, improving digital literacy, and creating an enabling environment for academic development.

The ASCO LAB was commissioned on 25 November 2025, while the Babanloma education and community projects were unveiled on 26 November 2025. Both events were organized by the NAF Civil-Military Relations (CMR) Branch as part of ongoing efforts to implement CAS Special Intervention Programmes nationwide.

Attendees included representatives of the Minister of State for Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, senior military veterans, and the Vice-Chancellor of UNILORIN. At Babanloma, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, represented by members of the State Cabinet, served as Special Guest of Honour alongside traditional rulers.

Speaking on behalf of the CAS, the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, said the projects highlight the NAF’s commitment to non-kinetic operations that build trust and strengthen community partnerships.

He noted that the interventions align with the CAS’s vision of leveraging education, innovation, and civic engagement as vital pillars of airpower and national resilience.

AVM Lanre Ibrahim Oluwatoyin (rtd) expressed gratitude for the opportunity to facilitate the projects, describing them as a tribute to his family legacy and service to the nation. Community leaders and beneficiaries praised the interventions as transformative, stating that they would boost learning outcomes, enhance welfare, and deepen civil–military relations.

The CMR Branch noted that sustaining such initiatives for deserving senior officers across the country would continue to drive national development and reinforce cooperation between the Armed Forces and host communities.
