The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has hailed members of the INEC Press Corps for their crucial contribution to the nation’s democratic process.
He gave the commendation on Friday at The Electoral Institute, Abuja, during the public presentation of a new book titled “The INEC Press Corps: Chronicles of Nigeria’s Election Journalists”, authored by the Chairman of the Corps, Mr. Segun Ojumu.
Prof. Amupitan, who served as Chief Host of the event, described the publication as a landmark addition to Nigeria’s electoral literature. He applauded the author for documenting the sacrifices, risks, and behind-the-scenes experiences of journalists who cover elections across the country.
According to him, the work stands as a factual and historical testament to the vital role the media plays in ensuring transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s elections.
The INEC Chairman emphasized the indispensable role of the over 100-member Press Corps, noting that journalists are a critical link between the Commission and the voting public.
He highlighted how their reporting during recent electoral activities—such as the Anambra Governorship Election and the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR)—helped to inform citizens, track developments, and promote accountability among stakeholders.
He further stressed that in an era where misinformation can spread rapidly, the professionalism and accuracy of the Press Corps are essential for sustaining public trust in the electoral process.
Prof. Amupitan also reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement ahead of upcoming electoral activities, including the 2026 FCT Area Council elections and the Ekiti and Osun governorship polls.
He urged journalists to rely on INEC’s official website, digital platforms, and designated officers for verified information, insisting that the era of unverified sources must end. He also called for stronger collaboration with the media to combat vote-buying, false narratives, and practices that undermine the credibility of elections.
While commending Mr. Ojumu for the insightful publication, the INEC Chairman noted that the book serves as a roadmap for enhancing electoral accountability and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic culture. He charged the Press Corps to continue its patriotic duty of delivering factual, timely, and objective information to the public.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Dantalle; FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Aminu Idris; Acting Director-General of The Electoral Institute, Prof. Ibrahim Sanni; media executives; and senior officials of the Commission.
